With Gideon Amir

The Books of Samuel describe the transition from a tribal system to a monarchy. In the Books of Joshua and Judges, the tribal system played a major role; the Book of Samuel shows the different efforts to create a central leadership for the whole of Israel. These efforts start with God’s messenger Samuel, first of the Major Prophets to prophesize inside the Land of Israel. Samuel was at the cusp between two eras, and was instrumental in establishing Israel’s Monarchy with the anointing of the first two kings of Israel: Saul and David.

Rabbi Joshua O. Haberman and Phillip Ratner, co-directors of the Bible Study Center, issued this statement of purpose:
"We envisage the Bible Study Center as a fellowship of learning welcoming all who look to the Bible for a sense of God's presence and believe that Biblical texts can help us cope with the challenges of human existence. Our chief aim is to connect the Bible with contemporary life."

The Bible Study Center will feature courses on all of the 39 books of the Bible, highlight the impact of the Bible on civilization, arrange Bible-in-Art exhibits and guest lectures by Bible scholars and archaeologists.
